Boris Johnson is set to address the nation this evening (Sunday, December 12).
It comes after the UK’s Covid alert level has been increased to level four, its second-highest level.
The change in level follows advice from the UK Health Security Agency (UHSA) amid soaring rates of the Omicron variant.
It’s understood the PM will be addressing the nation to discuss the Covid booster programme and not any new restrictions.
It was confirmed earlier today that the first people in the UK have been hospitalised after catching the Omicron variant.
The address will be pre-recorded, not live, and begin at 8pm.
In a statement, the chief medical officers said: “Early evidence shows that Omicron is spreading much faster than Delta and that vaccine protection against symptomatic disease from Omicron is reduced.
“Data on severity will become clearer over the coming weeks but hospitalisations from Omicron are already occurring and these are likely to increase rapidly.”
